Palm Sunday: Foolish Knight

For Palm Sunday, I wanted to share a song I found a few days ago along with something titled only “from a Christian Lectionary.” The words from the lectionary are first. [Just a heads-up – I’ll be posting two more Easter-related messages in the next few days so that anyone who wishes has time to reflect on them before the weekend!]

Now to the gate of my Jerusalem,

The seething holy city of my heart,

The Saviour comes. But will I welcome him?

Oh crowds of easy feelings make a start;

They raise their hands, get caught up in the singing,

And think the battle won. Too soon they’ll find

The challenge, the reversal he is bringing

Changes their tune. I know what lies behind

The surface flourish that so quickly fades;

Self-interest, and fearful guardedness,

The hardness of the heart, its barricades,

And at the core, the dreadful emptiness

Of a perverted temple. Jesus come

Break my resistance and make me your home.

The song is called Palm Sunday: Foolish Knight by Liturgical Folk and featuring Liz Vice. It is from their album entitled Lent. I’ll warn you that just reading the lyrics without listening to the music loses about 80% of the substance (my humble and very scientific opinion).

Lyrics

Like a foolish knight mounted on an ass
The Messiah comes to Holy Zion.
Those who should receive Him receive Him not
While the small ones name Him David’s scion.

Hosanna Jesus. Hosanna, Dear Lord!
Hosanna Jesus. Hosanna, True Son.
Hosanna Jesus. Hosanna, Blessed Lamb.
Hosanna, Jesus. It’s new life You’ve won.

More than David’s son Jesus comes to die.
He is lifted up, our Savior glorified
On the Cross exalted, the Son of God,
He is Lord of all, True Human deified.

Hosanna Jesus. Hosanna, Dear Lord!
Hosanna Jesus. Hosanna, True Son.
Hosanna Jesus. Hosanna, Blessed Lamb.
Hosanna, Jesus. It’s new life You’ve won.

Open our eyes to see the truth He bears.
Open our minds to know true power’s sway.
Open our lips to praise His Name on high.
Open our hands to pave His holy Way.

Hosanna Jesus. Hosanna, Dear Lord!
Hosanna Jesus. Hosanna, True Son.
Hosanna Jesus. Hosanna, Blessed Lamb.
Hosanna, Jesus. It’s new life You’ve won.

Hosanna Jesus. Hosanna, Dear Lord!
Hosanna Jesus. Hosanna, True Son.
Hosanna Jesus. Hosanna, Blessed Lamb.
Hosanna, Jesus. It’s new life You’ve won.
Hosanna, Jesus. It’s new life You’ve won.
It’s new life You’ve won.

…they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!”

John 12:13-15
